Steve A. Watts, MD, FAAFP, CAQ SM
Steve A. Watts, MD received his bachelor’s degree in biology and chemistry with honors from the University of Houston. He also earned a secondary teaching certificate. Following medical school at the University of Texas at Houston he entered a residency in family medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern, John Peter Smith Hospital, in Fort Worth, Texas. There he was awarded the Resident Teaching Award. Dr. Watts also holds a Certification of Additional Qualification in Sports Medicine from the American Board of Family Physicians.
He entered private practice in Arlington, Texas in 1986 and built a practice from two physicians to fourteen providers. In 2000 Dr. Watts joined the faculty of the University of Mississippi jointly appointed to the departments of Family Medicine and Orthopedic Surgery and Rehabilitation. As Associate Professor (tenured) and Director of the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship Program he developed teaching programs in medical education especially related to physical diagnoses and orthopedic/musculoskeletal curricula. He is the author of many publications and has delivered over one hundred lectures both regionally and internationally. He obtained an honorary appointment as Visiting Professor at University College London in the United Kingdom through August 2012. He also served as Director of Sports Medicine for a medical technology company developing research in heart rate variability in athletes.
Personally, Dr. Watts is actively involved in Christian missionary work. He works among high school and university-aged young people. He has been a guest speaker in conferences and Bible schools in England, Wales, Russia, Ethiopia, and Uganda. A talented musician, he has composed 50+ hymns and has many songs published for Christian young people internationally.
